EVALUATING CONSCIOUS CONSUMER BEHAVIORS AMONG FOURTH GRADE STUDENTS: A SUSTAINABILITY PERSPECTIVE

Social studies course is one of the basic courses that carefully focuses on effective and active citizenship. In this context, it stands out with the values and elements it emphasizes on the social structure established based on conscious citizenship, blended with a sustainable and qualified education process. In recent years, the concepts of sustainability and sustainable development have also attracted attention in developmental discussions on the concept of citizenship. In a sustainable social structure, it is emphasized that individuals acquire conscious consumerism qualities as active citizens. In teaching of concepts sustainability and conscious consumption’ through practical studies in social studies courses in terms of the relevant field literature can encourage. This study aims to reveal the conscious consumer behaviors of 4th grade students in the context of social studies course within the scope of sustainability. Quantitative research methods were used in the research application process, and the study was based on a pre-test-post-test experimental design without a control group. All data collected during the application process were analyzed and reported, analyzed through the statistical analysis program. In the light of the analysis of the data, it is understood that at the end of the implementation process of the study, 4th grade students' conscious consumer behavior improved positively at the point of sustainability within the scope of the course. Based on the experimental application process for the development of conscious consumer behaviors, it is remarkable that the social studies course is an individual and socially encouraging course that supports the process. Based on the study's results, like this study process it is thought that using alternative teaching studies such as practical works in the social studies course teaching process of conscious consumption behaviors’ can augment and improve the students' interest in the social studiies course. In this respect, it is recommended to increase the activities based on qualitative and mixed methods related to the subject within the scope of the course and to support conscious consumer behaviors in individual and social terms.
