THE EFFECT OF EMPATHIC TENDENCIES OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS ON THEIR LEADERSHIP BEHAVIORS PREFERRED IN SPORTS

In this study, it was aimed to determine the effect of empathic tendencies of university students on their leadership behaviors. Within the scope of this purpose, the sample of the study consists of a total of 414 participants, 201 female and 213 male, determined by the convenience sampling method among university students studying at Yozgat Bozok University and Kırşehir Ahi Evran University in the academic year 2019-2020. In the study, "Empathic Tendency Scale" (ETS) and "Leadership for Sports Scale" were used as data collection tools. The distribution of the data was examined with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and it was determined that the data showed a normal distribution when the kurtosis and skewness values were taken into account. Independent-Samples t Test, One-Way ANOVA, Pearson Correlation and Simple Linear Regression Analysis were used to analyze the data. As a result of the analyses made in this direction, it was determined that the mean scores of the leadership behaviors of the students were high while the mean scores of their empathic tendencies were at the medium level. When the correlation between the participants' empathic tendencies and leadership behaviors is examined, it is seen that there is no significant relationship between the mean scores of students obtained from the empathic tendency scale and the mean scores obtained from the leadership behavior tendency scale. When the linear regression analysis results regarding the effect of empathic tendencies on leadership behaviors were examined, it was determined that empathic tendencies had a positive effect on leadership behaviors, but this effect was not statistically significant. As a result, it is recommended to prepare training programs for students and to implement these programs regularly, since their leadership qualities and empathy skills can be improved with education.
