The research is aimed to determine the art based social studies learning experiences of fifth grade students. Therefore, phenomenology design, one of the qualitative research methods, was adopted. The study group consisted of 21 fifth grade students studying at a secondary school in Buca district of Izmir province in the second term of the 2018-2019 academic year. The research data were collected through face-to-face interviews through a semi-structured interview form. The data were analyzed by content analysis. As a result of the research, it was determined according to the students’ views that art made them feel positive and negative emotions, and that they were primarily interested in paper marbling, painting, sculpture, ceramics, origami, music, dance, folk dances, art of food and drink. The artistic activities carried out in the social studies course were evaluated within the scope of activities that were fun, motivating, making learning permanent, differentiating according to learning domains, making the student both active and passive, irregular, unclear, numerically insufficient, and not covering different branches of art. The majority of the students stated that they wanted art to be used in the social studies course. Art can be integrated with most of the themes in the social studies course, and different arts can be chosen for this. Art can be used for purposes such as raising public awareness, establishing a science-art relationship, becoming more successful, learning inventions, facilitating the theme, socializing, and promoting. According to the students, learning art based social studies has several advantages as well as some disadvantages. In line with these results, it is recommended to use art frequently in the social studies course and regular and purposeful studies can be conducted in which social studies courses and art are integrated. While teaching art based social studies, the activities to be carried out to make students active in the process must be student-centered and include different branches of art, considering individual differences. Because of the number of studies dealing with the relationship between art and social studies are limited in the literature, it is expected that theoretical and applied research will contribute to the field.

Araştırmanın amacı, sanat temelli sosyal bilgiler öğretimine yönelik öğrenci görüşlerini belirlemektir. Bu amaçla nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden durum çalışmasının bütüncül tek durum deseni kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu, 2018-2019 eğitim ve öğretim yılının ikinci döneminde İzmir ilinin Buca ilçesindeki bir ortaokulda öğrenim gören 21 beşinci sınıf öğrencisi oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmanın verileri yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme formu aracılığıyla, yüz yüze görüşmelerle toplanmıştır. Veriler, içerik analiziyle çözümlenmiştir. Araştırma sonucunda, öğrencilerin görüşlerine göre sanat, olumlu ve olumsuz duygular hissettirmekte ve daha çok ebru, resim, heykel, seramik, origami, müzik, dans, halk oyunları ve yeme içme sanatları merak edilmektedir. Sosyal bilgiler dersinde gerçekleştirilmiş olan sanatsal etkinlikler; eğlenceli, motive edici, öğrenmede kalıcılık sağlayan, öğrenme alanlarına göre farklılaşan, öğrenciyi hem etkin hem edilgen kılan ve düzensiz, amacı net olmayan, sayısal olarak yetersiz, farklı sanat dallarını kapsamayan etkinlikler kapsamında değerlendirilmiştir. Öğrencilerin büyük çoğunluğu sosyal bilgiler dersinde sanatın kullanılmasını istediğini ifade etmiştir. Sanat, sosyal bilgiler dersindeki çoğu konuyla bütünleştirilebilir ve bunun için farklı sanatlar seçilebilir. Halkı bilinçlendirmek, bilim-sanat ilişkisi kurmak, daha başarılı olmak, icatları öğrenmek, konuyu kolaylaştırmak, sosyalleşmek, tanıtım yapmak gibi amaçlarla sanat kullanılabilir. Öğrencilere göre sanat temelli sosyal bilgiler öğretiminin çeşitli avantajları olduğu gibi bazı dezavantajları da vardır. Bu sonuçlar doğrultusunda, sosyal bilgiler dersinde sanatın sıklıkla kullanılması ve sosyal bilgiler dersiyle sanatın bütünleştirildiği, düzenli ve amacı belirli olan çalışmaların yapılması önerilmektedir. Sanat temelli sosyal bilgiler öğretimi yapılırken öğrencileri süreçte aktif kılmak için gerçekleştirilecek etkinliklerin öğrenci merkezli olması, bireysel farklılıkları gözeterek, farklı sanat dallarını kapsaması önemlidir. Literatürde sanat ve sosyal bilgiler ilişkisini ele alan çalışmalar sınırlı sayıda olduğundan, kuramsal ve uygulamalı araştırmaların gerçekleştirilmesinin alana katkı sağlayacağı beklenmektedir.
