Visual arts education is an educational system that allows individuals to express their inner world, supports the development of motor skills, provides relaxation, boosts motivation, and provides opportunities for socialization through group work. Visual arts education holds a crucial place in the field of special education, as it does for typically developing individuals. One of the most frequently studied and studied disabilities in special education today is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The importance of visual arts education is undeniable for children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), who possess exceptionally high visual intelligence. Within faculties of education, a 10% quota is reserved for students with disabilities. These quotas typically include students with disabilities such as hearing impairment, visual impairment, or physical disabilities. Intellectual disability or Autism Spectrum Disorder is not a common condition encountered during undergraduate education. This enhances the significance of the research and makes it more striking and valuable. This study, conducted with a visual arts teacher candidate diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and studying in the Department of Art Education at Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University, aimed to evaluate the teacher candidate's adaptation to undergraduate education and academic achievement. Data were collected using a semi-structured interview form, a qualitative research technique. Observation and interview techniques were also used in the study. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive analysis. The study revealed that the visual arts teacher candidate diagnosed with ASD had significant difficulties adjusting to undergraduate education, was unable to make friends, felt very lonely, and had difficulty understanding theoretical courses and felt inadequate in terms of talent in applied field courses. Despite these adaptation difficulties, the teacher candidate's academic achievement was significantly above her class grade point average in all courses she took.
